12mo (6”x3.5”). [12], 286, [2] pp. Complete. Red-grained calf with gold lining to front and rear boards. Title in gold on spine. AEG. Corners bumped. Marbled endpapers. Nice frontis of Cardinal Mazarin. Bookplate of John G. Watmough. Overall nice and clean interior, with light toning to pages. Finely bound volume.

A selection of letters from Cardinal Jules Mazarin (1602-1661) to Louis XIV. Cardinal Mazarin, was an Italian Catholic prelate, diplomat and politician who served as the chief minister to the Kings of France Louis XIII and Louis XIV from 1642 to his death. He was made a cardinal in 1641. His role as educator of King Louis XIV began on Louis’8th birthday, and lasted until the Cardinals’death.

No other copies seen at auction since 1969. This particular copy was sold at Henkels Auction (Oct. 24,25,26) 1917, lot#247.
